Walok
Love and Art in Baliem
Published in 2015, Walok is Stephane Sensey’s first photographic book and marks the beginning of a long-term commitment to documenting cultures and traditions across Indonesia.
Named after the Dani word for “love”, Walok is an intimate visual journey into the Baliem Valley of Papua. Through powerful black and white photography, the book explores the lives, traditions and identity of the Dani people with honesty, respect and humanity.
More than a documentary project, Walok reflects a belief that photography can preserve memory, celebrate cultural heritage and create a lasting connection between people, generations and places. It is the first chapter of an ongoing body of work dedicated to observing, witnessing and transmitting the richness of our world’s living traditions.
